I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer with family and friends! I can't express how excited I am to be starting as Principal at Rice and continuing the positive momentum that Andrew Keough started during his interim year.
Recently, my wife, kids and I hiked Mt. Ellen in the sweltering heat and humidity. It reminded me of my time living in Thailand; we had to take cover through a few torrential downpours but made it to the summit as we dodged the thunderstorms coming over the ridge of the Green Mountains. Hiking a mountain is similar to how a school year feels. It is an adventure, you will have obstacles and challenges, but through hard work, empowerment, and faith you make steady progress on your journey. There are highlights like wild strawberries, flowers, beautiful views, and moments where you take a break and catch your breath before scaling the next curve. Eventually you reach the summit and the feeling of accomplishment and the panoramic views make all the adversity worth it!
I look forward to getting to know our students and families in the upcoming year and building trusting relationships so we can all climb the school year mountain! Together we will continue to make Rice a wonderful place for students to excel academically, grow in faith, contribute to community, and reach their God-given potential.
In a couple of weeks we’ll be sending out a short survey to gather your feedback. Our hope is to gain insight on the aspects & traditions that you love about Rice and on the things that could be improved in the future. Watch for it in late July.
I want to emphasize that there is an incredibly strong team here at Rice that deeply cares about our students and is actively preparing for an amazing school year ahead. I had some productive meetings with Andrew Keough and Dan Routhier and feel supported, and well equipped with direction from the strategic plan developed after the NEASC visit.
I hope summer brings many special moments for you with family and friends and that you have an opportunity to rest and recharge.
