One of my favorite biblical references for Advent is the image of the potter working with some clay. At the end of the reading given for the first Sunday of Advent this year, the prophet Isaiah reminds the people that even though things have been difficult for them, they should draw hope from the fact that they are the work of the Potter. God loves them, and will never abandon them, because they are the work of God’s hands.
I think this message speaks to us after months of living with COVID-19. This has dragged on much longer than I thought it would. I am tired of Zoom meetings, and masks and not being able to visit with friends. Reflecting on the words of Isaiah, I am encouraged to be patient and know that God still hears our prayers.
This Advent is a time to call out all the louder: Come, Lord Jesus! Restore your people! Bring healing to your people, the work of your Father’s Hands.
