The objective of the Rice Community Service Program is to encourage and guide students to live out the teachings of Jesus Christ. As such, it has two major goals: bringing forth the kingdom of God and reaching out to the poor, vulnerable and marginalized in society. We hope that participation in these efforts will help students grow in faith, develop important character traits, learn new perspectives and engender compassion.
Some of the projects in which students participate are the Lund Family Picnic, the CROP and COTS Walks, King Street Youth Center, the Thanksgiving Basket collection, The Legacy Project, the Polar Express, Breakfast with Santa, and Special Olympics, including the Young Athletes Program and the Penguin Plunge.
Peer Ministry is a group of dedicated Juniors and Seniors who lead by Christian example. They strive to love and serve others as Christ would, to be respectful, responsible, compassionate and understanding, to exercise patience and self-control, and to foster a Christian community both inside and outside of Rice. Peer Ministry members are devoted to God and to others and aim to grow in faith.
Peer ministers gather twice a month to pray, to organize service projects, to prepare for retreats and prayer services, for fellowship, and to generate ideas which serve the entire Rice community.

Dermer Dreams is looking for students with leadership skills ready to fight hunger in South Burlington - VT. When a student signs up as a Neighbor Captain in Vermont, Dermer Dreams provides them with 50 donation bags and flyers, so they can distribute them to anyone they want. It is the Captain’s job to create and run their own food drive and to collect as much food as possible. All the Neighborhood Captains collect their bags on the same day and deliver the food to the drop site, where it is distributed to local food shelves to feed the people who are hungry in their community. After the student delivers the food, they are given a certificate for 10 hours of community service to log for service hours.
The Leadership Program is for especially enterprising students who sign up to recruit and manage a team of 20 students to be Neighborhood Captains for our upcoming food drive. Leaders receive 20 leadership hours of service. Contact Person: Jari Chevalier [email protected]
Several Parishes from the Diocese from Burlington are looking for high school helpers to assist during the week-long Totus Tuus Summer Youth Program. This is a great way to earn required service hours for graduation, by engaging with grade students (1st - 8th), 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in a classroom setting, learning more about our Catholic faith and connecting with the missionary team. High school helpers can expect to serve as the missionaries’ assistant in the classroom. This may include passing out materials, escorting young children to the restroom, playing games at recess, helping pass out cookies and popsicles, helping in the kitchen if needed, and assisting with escorting students to Mass. ALL high school helpers are a valued part of the Totus Tuus team, and we welcome your help!
If interested, please choose the parish closest or most convenient for you, and contact the parish coordinator as soon as possible Here. Three of the missionaries are Rice alumni and they are looking forward to sharing this faith filled and fun Summer 2023 with you.
