Noreen Lauzon Murphy ‘61 is an unlikely host parent. After raising three children of her own and retiring from a 52 year career in nursing, she has earned the opportunity to enjoy her golden years. Yet, when John Lavoie ‘83, representing the Rice School Board at the Class of 1961’s 60th reunion, mentioned the school’s need for host families, she was inspired. “It piqued my interest,” explained Noreen who witnessed the bond her niece’s family built with a Korean student they hosted. “I’ve raised three children, I have the extra room, I have nothing to lose and everything to gain by trying it,” she figured.
Noreen hosts two Rice Prep hockey players, Justin Thies '23 from Liverpool, New York and David Shidlovskii '22 from Moscow, Russia. She was immediately impressed by their commitment to their sport, their focus on their studies, and their independence.
Justin’s parents frequently travel to Vermont to attend the boys’ games at Cairns Arena. Noreen graciously opens her home to them each time. “As a parent, I’d feel more comfortable knowing who my son is living with,” she explains. Noreen attends the games as well, even volunteering her time with tournament duties.
At 78 years old, why did Noreen choose to become a host parent? “I’ve lived my life based on the motto “It is in giving, which is in itself, the highest form of receiving,” said Noreen. “My Rice education taught me that when you serve others, you are serving the Lord. I have a deep faith and that’s why I do this.”
This self-described “Mom away from home” encourages anyone, especially fellow Rice alumni to become a host parent. “This has been a wonderful way for me to give back to the school that I loved.”
