On February 28th and March 1st, the Rice Alpine Ski Team competed in the state championships at Burke Mountain. Both teams battled through sub-zero temperatures on day one and difficult course sets combined with cold, gusty blowing snow, and ice on day two. The girls won the slalom and were runners-up in the giant slalom (GS), taking silver in the overall, losing to CVU by just one point. The boys’ team took fifth overall. The combined boys’/girls’ team finished third behind CVU and Woodstock. Rice had several top 20 individual performances with Blythe Fitch-O’Leary ‘23 finishing second in the slalom and sixth in giant slalom, Taylor Moulton ’25 14th in slalom and 17th in GS. Eloise Harris ‘22 finished 17th in slalom and Tela Haskell ’23 finished 20th in GS.
Alpine Team Mom, Sarah Fitch had this to say about her time at Burke, “ I was so, so proud of the Rice team. These kids really care about one another. No matter what bad thing happened, be it a crash, a disappointing run, or the sadness at the end of a long racing “career,” they were really there for each other… It was a truly trying couple of days, but I’ve also never seen so much hugging and support of teammates at a ski race.”
Congratulations to the Rice Alpine Teams on a great seasons!
