On March 10th, the Rice Boys’ Basketball team faced off against Rutland in the team’s third straight state championship appearance. The Knights got off to a slow start, spotting Rutland a 10-point lead to open the first quarter. Coach Pecor took a timeout in an effort to right the ship and the boys locked in on defense to prevent the margin from growing, heading into halftime with a 21-12 deficit. The Green Knights came out with renewed energy in the third quarter tying the game at 26 mid-way through the frame, going 7-12 from three-point range, but failing to make a two-point field goal on 18 attempts up to this point. Rice had seven players score in the all-around effort led by Adam Bilodeau, ’23 (16 points) who put on his gutsiest performance of the year when it mattered most.
Trailing by two heading into the third quarter, the Knights were able to complete the rally with a key layup from a driving Sharif Sharif ’23 after a put-back lay-in from Mo Kanneh ’23 off of one of his three offensive rebounds. Bilodeau, Drew Bessette ’24 (11 points) and Carter Blanchard '23 iced the game at the free-throw line giving the Knights their third consecutive championship and 18th in program history. Without a senior on the roster, Rice expects to make another run at their fourth title in four years during the 2022-2023 campaign.
