Rice Memorial High School is hosting its first back to school celebration in honor of the schoolwide summer read, “The Martian” by Andy Weir on Friday, September 2nd. This all day celebration for Rice students will include educational activities, all connected to The Martian. Lunch will be provided for the students with a “potato” theme, and, if you read the book, you know the importance of this!
The event will end with carnival-like games including a potato spoon race, a 75 foot inflatable obstacle course, inflatable twister and a tug of war between the classes.
Rice Principal, Dr. Andrew Keough, commented that “this is an incredible opportunity to engage the entire school community surrounding the reading assignment over the summer with fun, educational activities.” This sentiment is echoed by fellow teachers including Devin Collins, Rice History Department Chair. Devin said that this event will pull the elements of the book including, “tenacity, team work, and thoughtfulness to celebrate reading.” Other Rice faculty and staff members including, Dr. Alicia Jaramillo, Tim Fitzgerald, Stacy Bessette, Nancy Viner and Debby Rolland were part of the planning committee.
This event was made possible through the Student Life Fund established by a generous anonymous donor to Rice. This fund is available to Rice students and teachers to apply for funds for activities related to engaging the student body.
