The Air Force Association solicited Vermont’s high school principals for nominations in identifying talented and charismatic teachers who engage students in cultivating a love of learning in the curriculum areas of STEM.
Since Darren’s hire Rice has seen an exponential increase in students electing to be in his Physics class-both regular and AP,” explained Principal Lisa Lorenz. You have only to walk down the hall to discover why. He engages the students in hands-on fun activities that they can relate to all the while deepening their knowledge and mastery of the concepts of physics.”
Just 16 percent of American high school seniors are interested in careers in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM). The Air Force Association believes that to equip students with the knowledge and skills required for future innovation, the number of students and teachers in STEM fields must be increased.
“Darren exhibited a passion for physics - in his approach to teaching, the extra time he took to apply concepts to real world situations and his "hands on" techniques,” explained Brigadier General Richard N. Harris, Jr., Assistant Adjutant General for the Vermont National Guard. “We believe that Mr. Clas’s impact will be felt for years to come as he inspired students to further pursue STEM studies in college and beyond.”
Along with grants and scholarships, the Air Force Association (AFA) believes that recognizing those who educate America's youth is an important aspect of what AFA is all about. AFA's unique Teacher of the Year Program rewards special teachers who help students see STEM education as an exciting adventure. This is the seventh year the Green Mountain Chapter of the Air Force Association has awarded this honor.
“I am thrilled to receive this award from the AFA,” said Mr. Clas. “Thanks to everyone at Rice, especially our department chair Sharon Boardman, and all my students as they inspire my creativity every single day.”
A graduate of Bucknell University with a Masters in Biology from Villanova, Mr. Clas has been teaching at Rice since 2018. Before coming to Rice, Mr. Clas did research for the OB-GYN Department at the University of Vermont Medical School. In addition to teaching, Mr. Clas coaches Rice’s Ultimate Frisbee team and advises the Gamers/Chess Club.
