We’re excited to announce we have diocesan approval, funding and the appropriate state and city permits for the first phase of our campus expansion plan! Starting this summer, we are moving forward with the building of a 78,500 square foot multi-purpose turf field that can be used by all of our fall and spring sports teams. This state-of-the-art surface will allow our student athletes to train earlier in the spring season and play longer in the fall. During the process of creating the new turf field, we’ll also be maximizing our campus’s space and creating another regulation size field in the baseball outfield.
The turf will open up new opportunities for us to host playoffs, events, camps, practices and collaborations with our nearby Catholic schools. The construction of the field will also help mitigate the stormwater problems that affect our parking lots, neighbors, and ultimately - Lake Champlain. We’re excited to elevate our campus in this way and provide our students with a consistent and reliable playing surface.
Additionally this summer, a new roof will be installed on the building and we’re rolling out some much needed tech improvements to our infrastructure and our classrooms. Our computer room is updated with new iMacs and several classrooms will have smart boards when we start next Fall!
Last but not least, we’re bringing on some phenomenal new staff. Next year we’ll have a new staff member in almost every department: two new science teachers plus new math, art, band, and history teachers. We’ve also hired a dynamic Director of Residential Life to support our students living in the dorms.
In sharing this with you, our Rice families, we want to emphasize three points:
This is the first project of a larger strategic capital plan. We also expect to add a track, tennis courts, new gym floor and bleachers, and a performing arts center and chapel. We know students have diverse interests and we care about all of them. Expansion takes time and resources - we’re taking action one step at a time.
This is student-centered and mission-driven. Our mission is to guide our students toward the realization of their God-given potential. Making improvements to modernize our campus, improve classrooms, and bring on new staff ultimately benefits our students and the experience they have at Rice. These improvements give our teachers, staff, and coaches the tools they need to empower our students.
This initial project would not be possible without our group of leadership donors. We are thankful for their investment and look forward to future projects where other Rice community members can partner with us in investing in the future of Rice.
Rice has had steady growth over the past ten years and it reflects our reputation for academic excellence, our strong community, and ultimately our commitment to our mission and our students. We're excited to keep the momentum going, Rice has a bright future. There’s never been a better time to be a student here and we thank you for choosing Rice.
